Pupdate! The Results Are In! Alopecia X In A Giant Alaskan Malamute

Hey guys as promised today’s video is an update on the pups and their vet appointments!
So Niko has finished her course of antibiotics and is well on the mend any tips for getting a dog interested in a dog bed would be very kindly appreciated so we can hopefully avoid this ever happening again. She doesn't like to sleep on soft surfaces and like Phil, chooses the cold hard floors as comfort at night.
Phils update its been a long 3 weeks of ruling out medical conditions and waiting to here back from the vets but we finally have some answers and it’s not what we expected or wanted to hear really! He doesn’t have hyperthyroidism which is what we’ve been treating him for, for the last 9 months! They say it's safe to rule that out and discontinue his medication. He doesn’t have Cushings we’ve ruled that out too (even though we've tested for this separately previously. His biopsies came back and had no concerns and we have finally arrived at a diagnosis and a treatment plan! His biopsies did however show that all his hair was stuck in a latency stage and that there has been no new hair growth for some time. This would explain the lack of regrowth when shaved and the thinning of hair over time.
Please keep your fingers and toes crossed we are one of the 40% that have success with this treatment as for 60% it does nothing. Worst case scenario is Phil being more lethargic at night when we give the medication but he'll be resting anyway. We'll monitor this closely for now and see what happens!
Of course we will keep you all updated! As always thank you so much for all of your support! Xx

  • I looked up a home remedy and this popped up : Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and it also gives the immune system a good boost. This makes apple cider vinegar a good home remedy to use on dogs when they are experiencing hair loss. Diluted equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water can be applied directly to the affected area. I don’t know though. I’m not telling you to do it because I don’t know how it may affect him and I don’t want him getting worse or something related. I only want this sweet puppy to get better. He’s such a good boy.

  • I'm in the US and there is an additive that you add to dog food to replace the enzymes that are cooked out of dog food because it is cooked at high temperatures and is called "Dinovite" or another substitute. It is an alternative to steroids and other drugs and people report that there dogs don't itch anymore and are more energetic. It's a healthy alternative to drugs.

  • I don't own a dog but you must be careful about giving medicine to any creature. Most drugs are toxic on some level. Whether they cause extreme adverse reactions or just mild side effects. It is truly a shame he was misdiagnosed and continuously treated for a condition he didn't have. You have to consider what effect that might have adversely had on him. Since you went to a specialist and concluded his condition is only cosmetic, maybe you should give drug therapy a rest. Let him heal naturally from whatever effects his misdiagnosed treatment had on him. Cause as mentioned, most drugs on some level, are toxic to the body. Look into nutrients dogs and your breed are generally short on. And remember everything in moderation. Many times I see dogs chew on grass and their owners discouraging it. There's a reason they do this. They are looking for nutrients they don't normally get. Sorta like the Ipex that climbs manmade dams, looking for minerals they desperately need. www.coniferousforest.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Alpine-Ibex-Climbing-Dam.jpg

One of my Newfoundlands wound up with a hygroma on one elbow that took a couple months to fully deflate. We upgraded to better throw rugs for the giant beasts to lay on, and that took care of it.

  • Did the round of blood work show food allergies or trees ,etc. In my mom’s area there are Columbia’s Mesquite trees that her last two dogs were allergic to that caused a runny nose. When I visit I have the same reaction. My mom has a new Greyhound and he is itching as a result of the Mesquite trees. All of the trees are off my mom’s property but the trees are every where and one can not escape them, sadly. She can give the dog an anti itch medication if she wants on bad dog itch days. Greyhounds have very little hair so losing a patch is noticeable. Good luck Philly Bear.

Is great internally as well as externally. Re Nikko's pressure sores, we use cooling pads for our dogs in summer. Just soft enough to relieve the pressure, but firm & cool for our Samoyed. • Hi, just an FYI for you. There is such a thing as a 'Cooling Gel Bed' for a dog. ( I had never heard of it until then). You literally fill it with cold water, which turns to gel and last hours and hours for the dog to stay cool on. It can also double up as a bed too as it is thick and comfy. I had a large Golden Retriever and I brought her back home to Scotland with me, from the West Coast of the US. That's where I first heard of them. I initially bought her gel bed in case the cargo hold on that long journey became too hot. Once back in Scotland, I would take it outdoors for her to lie on when it was hot outside and she wanted to be out there with me. It is a really durable bed and lasted for a good couple of years. My girl lay right on it as it was, but you can put a light blanket over it too, without losing the effect. Your dogs are gorgeous and I love watching them, they remind me of my girl. The link below is about as close as I can get to the one I had for my girl. Although this is add water to, whereas mine was adding water that turned to gel and lasted ages, It was definitely NOT toxic. I bought mine at Petco in WA state, maybe that's the difference. www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/kandh-coolin-comfort-blue-dog-bed

  • Maybe Phil's skin itches because the body knows there's supposed to be a coat change? Also as somebody with thyroid issues I'm deeply disturbed by this misdiagnosis. Slight changes in medication have a big effect on me. It can't be helped in my case but to "treat" some hapless creature that doesn't even have anything wrong with the thyroid... Philly bear is such a remarkably calm dog then. I'm glad his issues are mostly cosmetic. Maybe in a twisted way it's a good ish thing in a malamute. Slightly colder than normal because of this. Which helps when you were bred for Alaska but do not live there? Maybe. Also hi Milo you attention deficit having cat. And hi nico, I hope you'll find a good solution for your elbows!

  • Until the early 1900s before dog food was around, dogs ate real food. 50% of what is in dog food is carbs and fillers. I have fed my dog a Norwegian Elkhound raw for his entire life it is what dogs are supposed to eat. That being said, depending on Phil's age, transitioning from kibble to raw can be a challenge as his GI isn't used to it. If you do decide to feed raw start off will a small meatball size mixed in with kibble and transition to full raw over the course of a month or two. I will say this, most vets aren't a fan of raw diet because they have been taught at school its bad for them. However most veterinary schools get money from the pet food industry and thus they are basically lobbied to teach this. Most sickness and ailments can stem from a bad diet or at least not a good one, this rings true for dogs, cats, and even humans. Changing Phil to raw wont hurt him, but it may help, and I guarantee he will thank you for it.

  • Omg, you were treating your dog for hypothyroidism when he didn't even have it in the first place! So, you keep saying the hormone imbalance, YOU were giving your dog thyroid medication! This controls the hormones!!! What kind of vet do you go to?! The hair is fine... leave it alone and wait for his hormones to normalize. He might have allergies that are causing the itching and you need to take in consideration of the hormone imbalance that you caused by giving him the thyroid medication (hormones control EVERYTHING btw- aka thyroid gland) because of him not properly being diagnosed. Also, thyroid tests are not hard to read or understand. I'm not sure why your dog was diagnosed with this when he never had it. Dogs have 6-7 panels when testing for thyroid issues

  • So, the "hard patched" are calluses. Alaskan Malamutes are known for getting them due to their weight and if the floors are hard this obviously will not help with this issue, but only make the problem worse. Once these calluses open and are not attended to properly/taken care of (you can use ointments to help soften the calluses unless it's infected which will actually be an open wound at this point) then you need antibiotics to treat the infection which will be given to you by your veterinarian.

It sounds like the real issue is the itchiness, which is (I think) great considering scary words like biopsies were involved! I’m sure you’ve likely addressed or thought of this, but what about an antihistamine? • Look into Dr. Marty’s food and supplements. For your size dog the food would be expensive but you could just use some as a topper on their regular food and then give him the Shine and Luster and probiotics. Check out his website and look at the reviews. My dogs absolutely love this food and get excited twice a day at feeding time. And if it makes you feel better a lot of well known people go to Dr. Martin the states. Oprah is one of them and she had him on her show a number of years back.

  • If you don't want to make the jump all the way to raw (which I totally understand!). Start by changing the kibble. Manufacturer's are great at changing recipes without informing consumers. This can cause problems and make it really difficult to figure out. "It's the same food I've been giving them for years. That can't be the problem.". Takes a long time before anyone thinks to circle back to it as the culprit. The too biggest allergy culprits that I"m aware of are corn and chicken. Try a food without those in it and see what happens. As far as raw goes - you can start off with cooked. Fry him up an egg every week or so. Cook up some ground beef (or mince? I think you call it?) once in a while. Little things as you go. See what he likes and doesn't and what you can work into your schedule & budget . Best of luck!!

  • Don't take this wrong, I love your entire family and have been following you for a long time now. I know you mean well, but instead of all the vet visits etc, why not go back to the basics...? I live in Canada and up north Malamutes do not get elbow sores from lying in the snow and they certainly NEVER get washed/bathed with shampoos etc (that is actually life threatening to them)... please do not ever put a warming jacket on them, they are already way too hot in the climate they are in. You just had your beautiful baby girl Amelia but one day you will get to menopauze, and when you battle these hot flashes, you will get a small glimpse of what Malamutes, Polar Bears etc go through when they live in a climate they don't belong in. Please look at it through their eyes/instincts.

I have a very fluffy Aussie, and he also likes to lie on the tile or wood floors instead of a dog bed. I know it's because he's hot, it's usually over the AC vent. You've probably tried this, but we put a cool folded sheet over the bed, maybe two, and that seems to help. He won't even consider it otherwise. I'm really enjoying your videos, and watching the baby grow up along with your pets. That's how all new parents should be. I no long struggle with coat/ skin issues, and my dog is stunning, plus an added bonus is I also dont have issues with fleas and ticks, plus the kibble is much more affordable and all profits go to animal shelters, also it has better ingredients than most of the holistic brands for half the cost.. A friend of mine who is a naturpath reccomends a raw diet for severe excezma in children. She has had good results. Seems to be some connection 2ith diet and skin. Would lanolin or some kind of thick moisturiser stop their elbows from cracking? You could do a special "beauty treatment", put a waterproof adhesive wound patch over the moisturiser and top off with cut off socks to keep it all in place and to save your house. I hope you find a solution real soon. I just love watching your loving family. You should be so proud of what you have created. It is very special. All the best to your wonderful family. Caroline
